This is the first piece of music I ever composed. I can't remember the exact date but I may have written it - and written it down - as long ago as 1978. It was written on the acoustic guitar in my bedsit flat at 13 Chestnut Avenue, Leeds, hence its title.
Chestnuts was certainly written some time before August, 1980 because that was when I had a letter read out on Radio One, and I remember that at that time that I was living on the first floor. This, and Melancholy - my second ever composition - was written when I was living in one of the top floor rooms.
This recording was made at Venner Road sometime between September 1986 and 1992, and probably between 1987 and 1989. As usual this is a rather poorly fingered demo, but although it is a very simple piece of music, even for a complete neophyte (which I was not), I did entertain great hopes for it. And still do!
